The Michigan-Michigan State football rivalry isn’t that serious, guys

Twitter, or X, has been wild for the Michigan and Michigan State football rivalry lately. It’s not that serious, guys.

If you’re a Michigan or Michigan State football fan who has been on Twitter (sorry, “X”) over the past two days, you know that there has been some pretty lively banter going on about the rivalry between the two programs, especially with it being announced that the Battle for Paul Bunyan will be at night this year.

These discussions came to a head, however, with a tweet from a Michigan account, @GoBlueLexi117, where she was caught creating a fake MSU burner account so she could ridicule it for “threatening” her in her direct messages (DMs).

Here is the tweet, along with the reply that caught her red-handed from @LincoInCIay:

It says “edit profile” when it is your own account.

Really?

Engaging in rivalry banter on social media is one thing, but creating a fake account just to say you received threats of violence from MSU fans? A whole other level of chronically online.

With everything that has happened between the two programs since last fall, this tweet serves as a good time to remind everyone that this is, in fact, a football game. It’s not life or death. I like to talk as much trash to Michigan fans as the next guy, and I will absolutely do so this October, but it’s all in good fun. I will still be inviting my Wolverine friends to tailgate with me; I will still be throwing bags and enjoying the excitement of the day with all those I hold close, regardless of their allegiance. Because, at the end of the day, there are more important things in life than football.

Life’s too short to waste time on meaningless arguments online. So don’t be like Lexi in this situation. Don’t let a sports rivalry consume your livelihood in the middle of summer. Go outside. Talk to your friends. Talk to your family. Touch some grass.

And most importantly, Go Green.
