Top-50 Michigan State basketball target sets commitment date

Michigan State basketball has its sights set on one of the best big men in the 2024 class who will be committing in August.

Michigan State basketball fans have been spoiled over the past few years.

In fact, Tom Izzo had landed some of his best recruiting classes over the past four cycles. Don’t believe me? All you have to do is look at the average player rating during that timeframe. Since 2020, Michigan State has had an average player rating of at least 97 which is an unprecedented string of successful classes. Before 2020, Izzo had just one class that had an average rating of over 97.

If all goes as planned with the 2024 class, it’ll mark the fifth straight group with a 97-plus rating.

So far, Michigan State has Kur Teng and Jesse McCulloch committed, but there may soon be another big addition. Four-star center Aiden Sherrell, who has been a top target for a while now, released a top five on Saturday with an Aug. 13 commitment date.

Sherrell is the No. 38 overall recruit in the class, per the composite, and On3 has him ranked as high as No. 10. While he’s a composite four-star, On3 believes he’s a five-star and one of the 10 best prospects in 2024.

His list consisting of Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, and MSU could likely come down to a two-team race. Alabama has felt good about its chances for quite some time and Michigan State is also highly invested. Sherrell is originally from Detroit so picking Michigan State would be the decision to come back home to play college ball. But Nate Oates and Alabama have done a great job of recruiting him.

Sherrell would pair nicely as a floor-spacer with McCulloch in the post and he could be the athletic big that Izzo loves to work through down low. He is mostly comfortable around the rim, but has a decent jumper and can step out to the arc.

Will he choose MSU over Alabama? Right now, I’d say no, but a lot can change in three weeks.
