On Monday, Michigan State football was announced as a top four school for Kenowa Hills (Mich.) athlete Lundon Hampton. The Spartans remain in the hunt ahead of his scheduled official visit, but Hampton is set to announce his commitment this week.

However, it is not all good news for the Spartans.

More on Lundon Hampton

Hampton is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete for Kenowa Hills. He embodies the word “athlete,” with some schools evaluating him at running back, others at defensive back, or, in MSU’s case, looking at Hampton as a linebacker.

The Swiss-army knife style player ranks no. 1012 in the class, no. 81 among athletes, and no. 17 in Michigan. That said, the Big Ten is all over Hampton on the trail, with the top four comprising solely of Big Ten schools.

Hampton is cousins with former Michigan State football captain Khari Willis, but he is not a shoe-in Spartan.

Who is Michigan State football competing with?

The Spartans make up one-quarter of the top four, with Iowa, Michigan, and Penn State all remaining in the race for Hampton. Of the four schools competing for Hampton, Michigan has raced ahead and grabbed the lead late in his process, despite Iowa and MSU each visiting Hampton over the last four weeks as well.

Hampton is being looked at as a running back for the Wolverines, and they will be playing Michigan State football every year. A loss to the Wolverines for a player that the Spartans appeared to be in the driver’s seat for during most of the process is brutal.

247Sports analyst Corey Robinson, an expert for Michigan State football, has flipped his commitment predictions for Hampton to take his talents to Ann Arbor.

In a way, this does explain the flurry of offers the Spartans have sent out, with Max Bullough seeming to pop up in a state with an offer or two every few days. This includes Missouri commit Caleb Green, Texas tackle machine Rome Ewell, and a few more since the calendar turned to May.

If things go according to projection, Hampton, who entered the month as a Spartan lean, will end the month as a future Spartan opponent.
