Aidan Chiles was asked about his confidence heading into the FAU game and he gave the perfect answer to the media.
Aidan Chiles was asked in an interview today about how important the FAU game is in setting the tone for the rest of the season.
He responded with a single sentence: “Like I said before, if you bet, take the over.”
This is the type of tone that we want to see from a leader in the locker room. And hearing the stories from the coaching staff and media covering this team, you see the trait that stands out about Chiles: confidence.
A leader of men at captain
It’s not often that an underclassman is voted by his peers as a team captain. You have to look back to Brian Lewerke and Kirk Cousins as the last Michigan State quarterbacks who were multi-season captains. And in a clip from Jonathan Smith earlier today he cites that the reoccurring reason so many players voted for Chiles is “his ability to influence players on both sides of the ball.”
So clearly Chiles’ confidence is rubbing off on his teammates and they believe in him. This is the type of player who can win a locker room over. You want a player with his charisma leading a team down the field in must-score scenarios.
Looking back on the last few years of quarterbacks at Michigan State, they did not look composed. They placed the blame; they did not have chemistry with their team. The entire quarterback room quickly vacated to the transfer portal at the end of last season. That is a dead giveaway the locker room culture was not in a good state.
Looking ahead
Chiles has a long rebuild in front of him with this program. He is young, and he will certainly make his share of mistakes. But he also has the tools, both physical and mental, to completely alter the trajectory of the program behind Jonathan Smith.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to place a bet on the scoring total against FAU and the win total for the season.
