When you think of some of the best dunkers and athletes in Michigan State basketball history, names like Jason Richardson, Shannon Brown, Branden Dawson, and Miles Bridges immediately come to mind. But Coen Carr is right there, at the very least, says Jase Richardson.

The younger Richardson spoke to the media recently and was asked who the better dunker is: his dad or Carr.

Jase’s answer felt pretty easy as he replied “Coen” within milliseconds of being asked who he would take in a dunk contest. Mind you, his dad won two NBA Dunk Contests back in his day and was one of the best athletes in the world.

“I told coach this, I told my dad this,” Richardson said. “I think Coen’s the best athlete in Michigan State basketball (history).”

When he came to Michigan State, Carr was the newest commit of the 2023 recruiting class, joining Gehrig Normand, Jeremy Fears Jr., and Xavier Booker. And while he had a quiet freshman season in 2023-24, he has risen to new heights as a sophomore and he looks like a player who’s becoming more confident on both ends of the floor and that’s why he’s been playing 20-plus minutes per game.

Carr might be the best athlete Michigan State has ever seen, but he’s become much more than just a dunker. He’s become a solid defender, a willing rebounder, and a guy who can put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket. Carr has worked on his shot a little bit this season and has even hit a couple of 3-pointers in recent games and is shooting much better from the line.

But everyone knows what he’s known for: his dunks.

Carr has been a thrill to watch this season and Jase Richardson has been in awe of his athleticism — and his dad is literally Jason Richardson. When someone whose dad was one of the best dunkers in the NBA at one point in time says that his teammate is a better athlete, you listen.

High praise from Jase.
