Jaxon Kohler is getting that offseason work in. In fact, he was working out with former MSU star Bryn Forbes this week.
Sophomore forward Jaxon Kohler has been working hard on his game this offseason and recently was seen working out with former Michigan State star Bryn Forbes.
Julius V, Kohler’s high school coach, posted a picture on Tuesday showing Kohler and Forbes after a workout together.
Forbes played at Michigan State for two seasons and I’m sure you all remember the great moments he helped contribute to during his time in East Lansing. He helped lead MSU to a Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2016 as well as a magical Final Four run in 2015.
Who can forget arguably his greatest moment in a Spartan uniform when he set the Big Ten record for most 3-pointers in a game when he made 11 in a 97-66 dismantling of Rutgers on March 2, 2016? That record still stands today and I can still vividly remember watching that historic feat on TV.
Forbes went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft but was picked up by the San Antonio Spurs and has gone on to have a pretty successful career. He has spent five total years with the Spurs as well as short stints with Milwaukee and Denver. Most recently, he played for the Minnesota Timberwolves this past season where he averaged 3.6 points in 25 appearances. During his career, he is averaging 8.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists with a very good 41 percent 3-point conversion rate.
Kohler will be returning to MSU for his second season where I expect him to get more minutes this year. During his freshman season, he averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 10 minutes per game while showing spurts of just how solid he can be.
Kohler had his best outing when he scored a career-high 12 points in a ranked win against Rutgers at the Breslin Center where he showcased his polished offensive game. There is definitely some room for improvement on the defensive side of the ball, but Jaxon has shown that he is as good as advertised on the offensive end with some of the best footwork I have ever seen from a college freshman.
I always love seeing former and current Spartans teaming up in the offseason to work out and push each other to get better. That is the culture Tom Izzo has built at MSU and something every player, current and former, takes to heart. And who better to learn from then one of the Spartan greats in Bryn Forbes who found a ton of success during his time at MSU?
Great things are ahead for Jaxson Kohler, and I would bet we see more great games out of him this season like we saw against Rutgers at home last year.
