Michigan State basketball should target 7-foot Yale big man

Unfortunately, he’s on the “do not contact” list.

Yale 7-footer Danny Wolf hit the transfer portal this week and Michigan State basketball should take a close look at him.

Another day means another portal entrant that Michigan State basketball and Tom Izzo should probably target. It’s no secret that finding a center in the portal is a top priority for MSU this offseason.

There are a lot of post players already in the portal that MSU could contact, but how about a center who’s 7-foot-0 and nearly averaged a double-double this season?

Danny Wolf is a sophomore from Yale who is coming off a great sophomore season. The 7-footer averaged 14.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game for Yale which went 23-10 and won the Ivy League. He had a good showing in their NCAA Tournament loss where he scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. I don’t know about you, but I would’ve loved to have a center that could do that.

But what separates Wolf from other transfer options is his ability to stretch the floor. He isn’t an elite 3-point shooter by any means, but he did shoot 34.5 percent this season. That’s pretty good for a 7-footer if you ask me.

Should MSU pursue him, though?

I think Wolf is one of the better center options that has hit the portal so far that Tom Izzo could realistically go after. I get the impression that Izzo isn’t as interested in one-year rentals, and Wolf has two years of eligibility remaining which would be ideal.

Wolf also would be a natural fit to the roster as well. Adding him would allow Xavier Booker to slide to the four, which would be a deadly combo. Imagine having two guys who are 6-foot-11 and 7-foot-0 who can stretch the floor. That would cause some major headaches for the Spartans’ opponents.

He is also a plus defender and averaged 1.3 blocks per game this season. The combination of Wolf and Booker’s length could also be extremely effective on the defensive end.

One thing to note is Danny has a “do not contact” label, so Izzo can’t reach out quite yet. Players can do this for a variety of reasons, but it’s possible he already has his next school in mind. But if that label comes off, Izzo would be smart to make the call.

I don’t think this is a must-get for MSU, but it surely would be a huge piece to add to the puzzle. There likely will be better options available in the portal later this offseason, but Wolf would not be a bad one.
