Michigan State football: Aidan Chiles is one step closer to becoming a Spartan

Michigan State football is one step closer to finding its QB1 as Aidain Chiles has entered the transfer portal.

Monday marks the official opening of the NCAA transfer portal for players who did not have a coach fired or are entering as a grad transfer. Last week we saw tons of movement from kids expecting to enter once the window opens and today is that day. And it’s a big one for Michigan State football.

After losing all three scholarship quarterbacks to the portal, new Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith was expected to pursue a portal quarterback or do his best to have Katin Houser or Sam Leavitt withdraw. Between his coach leaving town and Oregon State being relegated to the Mountain West, plenty of people have speculated that Oregon State’s Aidan Chiles could potentially hit the portal and follow his head coach to East Lansing.

Two things need to happen: One, Chiles needs to officially hit the portal and two, he needs to commit to the Spartans.

As of this morning, step one is complete.

Aiden Chiles officially hit the portal this morning and I’m expecting him to choose Michigan State. Chiles will get plenty of attention in the portal and MSU may need to ward off many West Coast schools that run high-powered offenses. Washington is expected to land Will Rodgers but Oregon, USC, and UCLA are looking to fill vacancies.

Why is this important?

Well, Chiles is the ideal quarterback for Jonathan Smith’s system. There is a reason Smith recruited him so hard to get him up to Corvallis. Oregon State is not known as a recruiting powerhouse so getting a player of his caliber to enroll is a huge deal and shows how much he believes in Smith.

Chiles is a dual-threat quarterback and was a top-100 recruit in the 2023 class and got some run this year as a true freshman behind Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

I would be very excited right now if you’re a fan of Michigan State football. Chiles would bring a playing style we haven’t witnessed before in East Lansing. Better times are on the horizon.
