Michigan State football is on commit watch on Tuesday with Arizona State cornerback transfer Edward Woods.

I’ve said it a dozen times before, and I’ll say it again: the transfer portal taketh and the transfer portal giveth. Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football were on the wrong side of that quote just a week ago but things have changed in a hurry.

After losing several backups and even a starter (Derrick Harmon) to the portal, Smith and the Spartans have landed three commitments in the spring transfer window in Anthony Jones, Brandon Lane, and Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams. On Tuesday, that number could grow to four with one of the most prominent defensive back transfers making a decision.

Following his visit to Michigan State on Monday, coveted cornerback transfer Edward Woods, a two-year starter at Arizona State, is ready to announce his commitment. He was just at Alabama over the weekend and many thought he’d commit on the spot, but Demetrice Martin and Smith got him to take one final visit. It seems like the Spartans have all the momentum right now.

In fact, Michigan State received three predictions to land Woods from the transfer portal on On3 from Steve Wiltfong, Kenny Jordan, and Pete Nakos. This feels like all the proof we should need to see that the Spartans are the leaders heading into this decision.

Landing a transfer over Alabama is massive. What’s even more impressive is that it looked like Woods was ready to commit to the Tide but Martin and Smith got him to East Lansing and seemingly changed his mind.

This coaching staff continues to impress, but we’re not going to count this as a win until he officially commits.

It does, however, feel like the staff is assembling a competitive roster and knows that the transfer portal is the only way to do so quickly after two disappointing seasons. Michigan State football is in good hands.
