Michigan State football: Elite 5-star CB on surprise visit

Michigan State football is currently getting a visit from one of the best cornerbacks in the 2024 recruiting class.

One of the biggest storylines of the Michigan State football offseason has been centered around recruiting momentum, or lack thereof. It has felt like a much slower start to the 2024 cycle than we’ve seen in years past under head coach Mel Tucker and his recruiting staff.

Now that we have reached the final days of June, the recruiting stove has become red hot.

This afternoon, it was reported that five-star cornerback and top-20 player in the 2024 recruiting class Charles Lester III is on campus today for a visit.

It’s unknown if this is an official or unofficial visit but the 6-foot-1, 171-pound defensive back is on campus regardless, and that’s a great sign.

Lester hails from Venice High in Venice, Fla., and holds offers from plenty of elite programs such as Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and Clemson, just to name a few. He also comes from the same high school as current Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley.

Described as a ‘long cornerback prospect’, Lester is a fluid defensive back that has the ability to change directions almost effortlessly. He possesses size and reach that will help any school on the outside and has an NFL future ahead of him.

It seems like things have been going much more ‘under the radar’ for MSU recruiting this year. We’ve seen a lot less media promoted from blue-chip recruits making it on campus and that is probably the result of former MSU staffer, Saeed Khalif, leaving the program. Plenty of those kids ultimately chose to commit elsewhere.

This is a big deal for Michigan State football.

New recruiting director Mark Deithorn is flexing his muscle heading into the last weekend of June.  Although it may be a stretch to get Lester to commit, the visit shows that the staff is working very hard behind the scenes.

Fingers crossed that MSU can land another talented cornerback from Venice, Fla., named Charles.
