Shortly after landing a top target from the transfer portal, Michigan State football lost redshirt junior Ethan Boyd.

For the second time this offseason, Ethan Boyd is in the transfer portal. The Michigan State football veteran entered the portal back in December after Jonathan Smith was hired but opted to withdraw his name and return to the program days later.

This time, it feels like his portal decision is final.

After not appearing much on the field this spring, per MLive, nor during the Spring Showcase, it felt like the writing was on the wall with Boyd. He seemed to have fallen behind on the depth chart despite starting three games last season.

While the depth on the offensive line will now be tested, it goes to show just how solid the two-deep is. If a player who started last year like Boyd is in the portal likely because of his spot on the depth chart, you have to feel good about the position group. Additions of Luke Newman and Tanner Miller to the offensive line should help Jim Michalczik’s group improve drastically.

Boyd showed some promise last season in his limited action and his decision to withdraw from the portal back in December felt like a huge win for the program. Unfortunately, something seemed to have gone awry this spring as he’s now looking for a new home again.

The East Lansing native has two years of eligibility remaining.

The portal hasn’t been all bad for Michigan State as the Spartans landed Arizona State cornerback transfer Ed Woods over Alabama earlier on Tuesday afternoon. Jonathan Smith has also landed Anthony Jones, Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams, and Brandon Lane since the spring portal window opened.

The offensive line took a big hit with its depth, but it should be fine heading into the 2024 season.
