Michigan State football picked up a crystal ball for a coveted tight end transfer in Oregon State’s Jack Velling.
This is a big one. Michigan State football just picked up their first crystal ball prediction to land former Oregon State tight end Jack Velling.
Jack Velling crystal nall
This, in my opinion, would be the biggest pickup for Jonathan Smith and Michigan State outside of quarterback Aidan Chiles. Jack is someone who can come in and be our starting tight end right away. Out of high school, he was a three-star recruit and the 26th-best tight end in his class. I would argue he would be nowhere near that low if they ranked his 2022 class again.
Velling has played two years of college football under Jonathan Smith at Oregon State. As a freshman, he racked up a solid 16-catch, three-touchdown, and 281-yard season. This past season as a sophomore, he doubled that production. He accounted for 29 catches, eight touchdowns, and 438 yards in a remarkable second campaign. His best outing this season by far came against California. Velling only caught 4 passes for 38 yards, but he also scored three touchdowns for the Beavers in that outing.
Significance of a Jack Velling commitment
This would be an extremely impactful commitment if this prediction comes true. As I mentioned already, Jack is a day one starter. With Maliq Carr departing East Lansing, Michigan State needed someone to fill his spot, and there aren’t many better options than Jack.
Jack also has two years of experience already with this coaching staff. So he won’t have to worry about getting used to a new coach and offense as he is already up to speed with what Smith wants to do with his offense.
And now for the best part, Jack already has a connection built with Aidan Chiles who will be the starting quarterback for Michigan State next season, and these two have already had one year to work with each other. Velling and Chiles have also even been able to connect on the field in a game as well. One of Jack’s eight touchdown cacthes this season came on a 10-yard pass from Chiles.
No recruitment is over until the recruit officially commits and signs. But we have to love our chances in this one. Now we wait and hope to see a commitment soon, then we can start dreaming of more touchdown passes between Velling and Chiles in East Lansing.
