Michigan State football has reached out to one of the best defensive tackles on the market in Wyoming’s Gavin Meyer.

If you asked most Michigan State football fans what the one position group on the roster is that needs the most help, they’d likely give an immediate answer: defensive tackle.

After quite possibly the worst possible offseason for the defensive line in terms of transfer portal losses, Michigan State is now down two of the top tackles in the Big Ten. Both Simeon Barrow and Derrick Harmon transferred out to Miami and Oregon, respectively. They’ll be starters at their new programs and likely give Spartan fans fits when they think about the shortcomings MSU has at the position.

But Jonathan Smith is working hard to address that.

On Monday, Smith landed Nebraska defensive tackle transfer Ru’Quan Buckley as well as edge rusher Tyler Gillison from Cincinnati. These two will help with depth, but Michigan State needs to add a starter up front. And Wyoming’s Gavin Meyer might be just that.

According to Pete Nakos of On3, the coveted Wyoming transfer has heard from Michigan State along with a handful of other Big Ten and ACC teams. In fact, he’s also heard from programs like Duke, Florida State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois.

Meyer, a 6-foot-4, 282-pound tackle, is one of the best at his position available in the portal. He had a productive last two years at Wyoming, accounting for 66 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and a forced fumble in 2022 and 2023 combined. Meyer could come in and compete for a starting spot right away with Maverick Hansen and D’Quan Douse.

You can never have enough depth on the defensive line and Smith is making sure he adds as many quality pieces as he can up front. He’ll have to battle it out with some top Big 12, Big Ten, and ACC programs for his services, but Meyer would be a heck of a transfer.
