Former Michigan State football lineman Nick Samac made the Baltimore Ravens’ final 53-man roster this week.
Roster cuts took place this week in the NFL and some former Michigan State football players got some good news.
One of the lucky roster-makers was former offensive lineman Nick Samac who was selected in the seventh round this past year.
Samac was one of the best offensive linemen during the Mel Tucker era and it was no surprise to see him selected in the NFL draft and it feels like the Ravens got a good one. And now he’s going to be fighting for a starting job in Baltimore.
As a center, he plays a premium position and he’s going to be the primary backup to Tyler Linderbaum. And he’s going to be in charge of protecting one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Lamar Jackson.
The former Michigan State star is just the latest offensive lineman to catch on with an NFL team. Brian Allen was released this past winter and Jack Conklin is fresh off a season-ending injury with the Browns, so there’s a lackluster representation of Spartan linemen in the league that Samac will help improve and hopefully under the guidance of Jim Michalczik, there will be more draftees in the coming years.
Samac will be missed in East Lansing, however. He was one of the most consistent linemen over the course of the past few seasons and his departure left a hole on the interior of the line that will be filled by less experienced guys. He will be replaced by the likes of Kristian Phillips, Tanner Miller, and Luke Newman on the interior and it’ll be interesting to see if these three can follow in his footsteps and be drafted into the league — my bet is that at least 1-2 of them will be selected in their draft years.
Spartan fans everywhere will be rooting for Samac in 2024 and beyond.
