Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith has offered the No. 1 cornerback in the country. Could he land a big fish?

Michigan State football is working to continue its recruiting momentum this offseason. The Spartans have had a lot of success earning commitments from the transfer portal and have been recruiting the high school recruits very hard as well.

This time, Jonathan Smith is hard after a a recruit in the 2026 class. This isn’t your average recruit, he is one of the best players in the entire country.

Meet five-star cornerback Brandon Lockhart

Brandon Lockhart is a five-star cornerback from Los Angelas, Calif. As I mentioned, this isn’t your average offer as Brandon is listed extremely high on the 247Sports composite rankings. According to these rankings, Lockhart is the No. 9 overall player in the 2026 class and the No. 1 cornerback.

As you can imagine with someone ranked as high as Lockhart, he has a lot of offers from other big time programs. On top of Michigan State, Lockhart has received offers from Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Penn State, and Miami. However, there is one clear school that stands out above the rest.

Brandon Lockhart is committed to USC

Lockhart may still be finishing his sophomore year of high school, but he has already committed to a program. Brandon committed to USC this past October and still remains committed to the Trojans. USC is one of the biggest programs in the country and from his hometown, so this will be a difficult recruitment for Smith to win.

One thing on Michigan State’s side is that he is still so young. Lockhart still has two more seasons of high school football, so anything is still possible. Especially in today’s day and age in recruiting, kids seem to commit and decommit from schools all the time, so maybe that will happen here.

There’s no saying if MSU has a realistic chance in this recruitment or not. I don’t plan on getting my hopes up, but I’m still happy to see Smith offering him. Crazier things have happened before, so maybe the Spartans will hit the jackpot with this recruit.
