This would be a nice get.

Michigan State football has set up an official visit with one of the top transfer running backs in the portal.

Jonathan Smith is not shy about using the transfer portal and that’s something that Michigan State football fans don’t take for granted. After watching Tom Izzo try to navigate the portal on the basketball side, it’s nice to see the Spartans linked to some top football transfers.

Earlier this week, Michigan State was linked to a couple of receivers as well as running back Peny Boone. This is just the beginning of the transfer news as the portal just opened up this week for the spring window.

On Friday, SpartanTailgate’s Corey Robinson reported that Michigan State would host UMass transfer running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams for an official visit on April 22.

This is a big-time development seeing as the Spartans are trying to correct the run game after a historically bad season in 2023. They do return Nathan Carter who figures to be the workhorse, but are Jalen Berger or Jaren Mangham trustworthy enough as RB2s?

With the rumored interest in Boone on Thursday and now this scheduled visit for Lynch-Adams on April 22, it seems like Smith wants to upgrade the backup running back and this would be a massive get. Lynch-Adams is coming off his best season as a collegiate running back, accounting for 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns last season on 4.9 yards per carry. He also had 20 catches for 118 yards.

Lynch-Adams is entering his sixth season of college football so he’d be one of the most experienced backs in the Big Ten if he chose the Spartans.

Getting this visit shows just how serious Smith is about upgrading the backfield in East Lansing. Michigan State football was built on the ground-and-pound mentality and he’s trying to bring it back. A one-two punch with Carter and Lynch-Adams would do just that.
