Spencer Brown, a multi-year starting tackle for Michigan State football, is now moving down to the SEC for his final year of eligibility.

On Dec. 6, Spencer Brown announced where he will be transferring to for his final collegiate season. Brown has started the last two years for the Spartans, as well as their Peach Bowl victory in 2021. He is the second Michigan State football to announce his transfer location on Wednesday, joining long snapper Hank Pepper, who committed to the USC Trojans today.

Spencer Brown’s legacy with the Spartans is mixed

Brown was a part of Mark Dantonio’s second-to-last class, committing to the Spartans out of Walled Lake Western High School. He was ranked as the No. 515 prospect in the class and the 40th-best tackle. He redshirted the 2019 season before making his collegiate debut in 2020 against Ohio State.

Brown made his first start against No. 12 Pitt in the Peach Bowl in 2021, filling in for the injured Jarrett Horst. In that extended action, Brown provided enough time for the Spartans and Payton Thorne to beat the Panthers. In 2021, over half of Brown’s 155 snaps came during this Peach Bowl victory, as the then-sophomore was on the field for all 89 of the Spartan offensive snaps. Since that high point, Brown has had a mixed legacy at Michigan State.

He started all of the games he was eligible for in 2022 and 2023. While starting multiple years for a Big Ten school is impressive, Brown was part of an underperforming Spartan line. Brown also had a few crucial drive-killing penalties that led to criticism of the tackle. In addition, he had an inexcusable personal foul call against the Michigan Wolverines this season. Unfortunately for Brown, when people are asked about Spencer Brown and his time at Michigan State, this play will come to mind. On Nov. 27, Brown officially entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer.

The veteran tackle will get a fresh start at Oklahoma as the Sooners move over to the SEC for 2024. This fresh start will also give Brown a new offensive line scheme, which could lead to an upward swing in performance. Brown joins former Spartan quarterback Hampton Fay, who is now a tight end for Oklahoma. According to Hayes Fawcett, Brown held offers from USC and Ole Miss, among others.

We at Spartan Shadows would like to wish the best for Spencer Brown as he completes his final year of eligibility with the Sooners.
