Michigan State football: ‘Spring Showcase’ will feature 4-quarter scrimmage

Michigan State football will hold its ‘Spring Showcase’ on Saturday and it will feature a four-quarter live scrimmage.

It’s been a few years since Michigan State football had a legitimate ‘spring game’ for fans to get excited about.

For years under Mel Tucker, he would hold open practices because the team had too many injuries to participate in an actual game or scrimmage. That format wasn’t the most popular for fans, but it was all the team could handle with the bodies it had.

Well, the scrimmage is back.

While Jonathan Smith’s first ‘Spring Showcase’ is more of an open practice, he did reveal that it will feature a live scrimmage consisting of four 10-minute quarters with a running clock, according to Matt Wenzel.

This has to be music to fans’ ears because the scrimmage is what most of us base our unrealistic expectations off of. Joking aside, it’s a chance for fans to see just how far along certain players are and what the team looks like in live action. It’s tough to get a read on the team from strictly practice drills. Anyone can look good going against air.

But it seems as if Smith knows that a scrimmage is a big part of the excitement of spring ball. Fans are hungry for some updates on the team and showing it off at Spartan Stadium for the first time will bring the excitement back. It’s been three years since fans have really had something to cheer for.

If you’re planning on going, the Spring Showcase will be at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday with free admission to the public. If you’re watching on TV, it’ll air a little later at 4 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to see Aidan Chiles take the field for the scrimmage.
