On Wednesday, Pat Fitzgerald and Michigan State football had their turn to speak with the media for Big Ten Media Days. The 27th Spartan head football coach enters his first season in the Big Ten since an tumultuous departure from Northwestern on a mission.
With the Spartans getting their turn to speak, it also saw the Spartan summer camp football roster revealed. When coming through the list, one thing quickly became apparent. Based on early projections, the Spartans were three players short of what could have been projected. When comparing to a spring roster, there were three names absent.
Spartan Shadows was able to confirm that three players are no longer with the Spartan football program.
Who is not with the Spartan Football Program?
DB Dorian Davis
Davis is the longest tenured player to depart from the team. The Woodhaven High School product was set to enter his redshirt senior season with MSU, and had seen the field for seven snaps in 2025.
The defensive back was a projected depth piece, but had played in five games during the 2024 season to earn a letter in the inaugural year of Jonathan Smith’s tenure. He walked on for his redshirt freshman season, but will not be finishing his career this fall. Davis did not run on senior day last season. At best, he was a projected depth piece for the Spartans, as they had attacked the portal in the defensive back room this winter.
EDGE Luke DeJager
DeJager is another walk-on, entering the program as a true freshman in 2024. The edge won practice squad player of the week before during his time with the Spartans, but had yet to see game action. DeJager’s departure also coincides with the acquisition of Aidan Boehle.
Additionally, the Spartans see Leonard Ah You bump from linebacker to EDGE, and Jaxson Wilson has flipped sides of the ball to become an EDGE as well.
WR Atticus Carridine
Carridine originally entered the program as a quarterback, joining the team as a walk-on after his first year on campus. He switched to wide receiver prior to the 2025 season, where he earned scout team player of the week prior to the Michigan matchup.
Carridine did not see the field during his two seasons with the team. The addition of former Kent State wideout Jameel Garnder Jr. ensures that the Spartans have the same number of bodies in the room heading into 2026. The Ypsilanti native was set to enter his redshirt junior season.
There was no reason given for any player’s departure.
