A top Michigan State football target at the quarterback position is back on the market after decommitting from Duke on Friday.

Michigan State football continues to get good recruiting news. This time it’s regarding four-star 2024 quarterback Tyler Cherry who has been committed to Duke, but that changed on Friday after he has backed away from that commitment.

This is coming days after he wrapped up an official visit to East Lansing on Dec. 9.

Meet four-Star QB Tyler Cherry

As mentioned, Cherry is a four-star quarterback in the 2024 class who is from Greenwood, Ind. He is a top-300 player in the class and the No. 20 quarterback, according to 247Sports composite rankings. A quarterback of this ranking decommitting this late in the recruiting cycle always sends shockwaves throughout the country.

Cherry is coming off an 11-2 senior season that saw him lead his team to the state semifinals. The year before, he led his team as a junior to a 12-2 record and state title. He was also named the IndyStar High School Football SuperTeam QB as a junior in 2022, only cementing the high caliber player he is.

Two-team battle for Tyler Cherry?

Tyler’s recruitment appears to be down to just two Big Ten East teams. Michigan State and Indiana.

Getting Cherry to commit to Michigan State will be a difficult task for a couple reasons. The first being that the Spartans competition in this recruitment is an in-state Indiana team. The Hoosiers are no juggernaut and recently have been one of the worst teams in the conference. But can we confidently say we have been that much better? Cherry’s hometown of Greenwood is also only an hour away from Indiana. Being able to play that close to your family and friends is always a big draw for recruits. However, Cherry has already shown that playing outside of the state of Indiana isn’t an issue as he was previously committed to Duke.

The second reason this will be tough to win is because of Michigan State’s most recent quarterback commit. The No. 1 transfer portal quarterback, Aidan Chiles, just committed to Michigan State a on Thursday. He also followed his coach Jonathan Smith which is a major factor as well. Chiles already knows Smith and how his team and offense operates, so if Cherry wants to come in and win the starting job as a true freshman maybe Indiana is the better option.

This recruitment will move fast as the 2024 recruiting cycle is coming to an end. Michigan State has to love their chances considering they just hosted him for an official visit a week ago. No predictions have been made yet on 247Sports, but I’m guessing that will change here soon.

Stay tuned as this recruitment is going to move fast.
