Jonathan Smith is not just dipping his toe into the transfer portal this offseason, he’s diving in head first. The first-year Michigan State football coach just went 5-7 in 2024 and he has been open about wanting to add to the roster via the portal.

It was reported on Monday that he would be hosting Northwestern offensive line transfer Josh Thompson this week and now there’s going to be another big-time transfer on campus on Friday.

According to reports, and after an offer from the Spartans, Kent State wide receiver Chrishon McCray will be in East Lansing this week.

The third-year wideout from Kent State has been electrifying for the Golden Flashes over the past two seasons despite the program being in a fairly dark place. They haven’t competed in the MAC with McCray there, winning just one game in 2023 and 2024 combined, but he was arguably the best player on the offensive side of the ball. Heck, he was just named to the All-MAC second-team offense this past week.

McCray will have a lot of potential suitors in the portal, but he is going to be in East Lansing this weekend. Smith knows that he needs to bolster that receiving corps around Nick Marsh with four recent departures in Jaron Glover, Aziah Johnson, Antonio Gates Jr., and Jaelen Smith. McCray would be able to come in right away and play major snaps on a likely bowl team right away.

The junior receiver has been on one of the worst teams in college football for the past two years and he’s put up 1,315 yards and 13 touchdowns on 81 receptions. Imagine what he could do with a legitimate NFL prospect at quarterback — yes, we know Aidan Chiles has work to do.

Remember the last time Michigan State football landed an electrifying transfer from the MAC? He ended up being pretty good and now he’s playing on Sundays as the No. 1 receiver for a playoff team.

Lightning could strike twice here.
