Michigan State gymnastics can clinch Big Ten championship on Friday

Friday night’s Michigan State gymnastics meet could yield historic results for the program. It could win its first outright Big Ten title.

Michigan State gymnastics is on the cusp of making program history. The Spartans are the lone undefeated team in the Big Ten at 5-0 in conference play. They are also the highest nationally ranked team in the conference at No. 8 in the country.

The Spartans have already had an amazing season this year, including beating Michigan in Ann Arbor. Friday night, however, could become the best night in program history.

Big five meet — Big Ten championship on the line

As mentioned, Michigan State entering Friday night sits at 5-0 in Big Ten play. The Spartans still have four more teams to play in the Big Ten, and they will play them all simultaneously at Penn State. Michigan State will take on No. 14 Ohio State, No. 15 Minnesota, No. 23 Nebraska, and Rutgers to finish out the Big Ten regular season.

If MSU comes in second place, it will earn a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship. It already accomplished this for the first time last year, so now the Spartans will look to one-up last year’s performance. If MSU finishes first in this five-team meet, they will become outright Big Ten champions for the first time in program history. This also would be the first time they are back-to-back Big Ten champions as well.

The rise of this program under head coach Mike Rowe has been nothing short of amazing. The Spartans were regularly one of the bottom teams in the Big Ten not too long ago. But the Spartans are on top now and hold their highest national ranking in program history. On top of their No. 8 national ranking, MSU is No. 7 on vault, No. 6 on bars, No. 9 on beam, and No. 14 on floor.

Friday night’s meet begins at 6 p.m. ET on Big Ten network. If you have never watched a gymnastics meet before, now is the perfect time. With five teams competing at once, it will be an action-packed night on BTN. Michigan State is also the headliner of the event, so they likely will get the most TV coverage as well.
