Michigan State hockey came back from 4-1 down against Michigan to beat the Wolverines at Yost on Saturday night.
Michigan State hockey wrapped up its first weekend series against Michigan. The first game of the series was played in East Lansing at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night, but we don’t need to talk about that game.
It was all Michigan in this game as the Wolverines dominated from the moment the game began. Michigan went on to win this game 7-1.
The two teams faced off again on Saturday night, this time in Ann Arbor. The Spartans avenged their loss from the night before in a big way.
Wild comeback in Ann Arbor
The second game of this series started in a very similar way to Friday night’s game. It was all Michigan early as the Wolverines jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second period. The Spartans, however, did not fold this time.
Michigan State responded by scoring four goals in seven minutes to take a 5-4 lead into the third period. The fifth goal was scored by senior Jeremy Davidson set up by a beautiful pass from Nicolas Muller.
Muller went on to add another goal in the third period, his second of the night, and Joey Larson added an empty net goal to make it 7-4.
Michigan added a goal late to make the final score 7-5 in favor of the Spartans.
MSU still No. 1 in the Big Ten
The Spartans still hold a slim lead at the top of the Big Ten standings. Wisconsin is bearing down on the Spartans and has played two fewer games than MSU, so the Badgers can take the lead in the conference if they keep winning.
Michigan State hasn’t had much success since the Big Ten formed a hockey conference in 2013, so this would be the first time the Spartans have won the Big Ten if they can hold on.
The Spartans’ next series is at home against No. 10 Minnesota this upcoming Friday and Saturday.
