Michigan State women’s basketball followed in the men’s footsteps, earning the season sweep of Michigan on Sunday.

We are just a couple days removed from Michigan State mens basketball’s 73-63 win over Michigan which earned them the season sweep over Michigan this year. So why not keep the party going?

The Michigan State women’s basketball team followed the men’s lead and defeated Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sunday, 70-66. The women also beat Michigan at home earlier this season 82-61, which means the win on Sunday also earned them the season sweep over Michigan as well.

Going 4-0 over Michigan in basketball doesn’t sound bad to me.

Spartans led by star off the bench

Only seven Spartans played for Michigan State on Sunday, and they were surprisingly led by one of the two players off the bench. Senior Tory Ozment led the way for MSU, finishing with 16 points and four rebounds. Spartan star DeeDee Hagemann also shined for Michigan State, finishing with 14 of her own points.

The Spartans persevered and found a new way to win on Sunday. Michigan State is No. 5 in the country in points per game, averaging 85.4 per contest. 70 points might be a normal score for a college basketball game, but it isn’t for MSU. With the offense not clicking like normal, the Spartans had to rely on their defense to win the game. And their defense showed up in a big way, limiting Michigan to just 66 points at home.

Michigan State in good position for the postseason

The Spartans move to 18-7 this season and 8-6 in Big Ten play. With four conference games remaining, the Spartans are No. 5 in the Big Ten with a great shot to earn the coveted double-bye in the conference tournament.

The Spartans are also in great position to make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2021. According to ESPN’s bracketology, the Spartans are comfortably in the tournament field as a 7-seed. This would be an amazing accomplishment under first year head coach Robyn Fralick.

Michigan State has had a lot of success across all of their athletics recently, but this weekend may have been the best. It’s always fun beating Michigan, but beating them twice in basketball on their home court in back to back days is priceless. It really doesn’t get much better than that.

Michigan State is back in action Wednesday at Purdue at 7 p.m. ET on BTN+.
