Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo is approaching a major milestone and he should reach it in the month of January.
Michigan State basketball head coach Tom Izzo is inching closer to his next career milestone. Izzo already has quite the resume under his belt. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016 and is also MSU’s all time wins leader. Tom also leads the Big Ten in all time wins and has the longest streak of NCAA Tournament appearances by a single coach at 25.
Michigan State also has countless program achievements while Izzo’s been the head coach. This includes 10 Big Ten regular season titles, six Big Ten tournament titles, eight Final Fours, and one national title.
Now, Tom Izzo is just a few games away from reaching his next career milestone.
Four wins away from 700
That’s right, Tom Izzo is just four wins away from 700 in his career. Boasting a 696-285 all time record, Izzo would become the 38th coach to reach this milestone in NCAA history. Even more impressively, Tom would be only the ninth coach to accumulate all of these wins at the same school.
Izzo would also become the only Big Ten coach to hit this milestone while coaching at the same school. There are a few other Big Ten coaches to hit the 700-win mark including Bo Ryan, John Beilein, and Bob Knight, but all three of those coaches were head coaches at multiple schools.
Looking at Michigan State’s schedule now, if it were to win every game, Izzo would hit this milestone at home against Minnesota on Jan. 18. Two tough road games stand in the way of that happening being our next two games at Northwestern and Illinois. But it just feels right for this milestone to happen at the Breslin Center.
If the Spartans lose one game, then Izzo would hit the 700-win mark at Maryland on Jan. 21. Then after that is another road game at Wisconsin. So even though I’d love for this milestone to happen in East Lansing, it seems unlikely unless the Spartans win their next four games. That won’t be impossible to accomplish, but it will be difficult.
Regardless of where this milestone is met, it will be a huge occasion for Izzo and the program. Izzo is the best to ever do it in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country, so he deserves all of the success that has come his way.
