He’s not wrong, but the inconsistency could kill this team.

Tom Izzo has high hopes for Michigan State basketball for the remainder of the year. He says the Spartans will go on a run.

Michigan State basketball is coming off arguably their best win of the season as they defeated Illinois at home 88-80. The Spartans needed that win badly, but they can’t celebrate for long as they have to keep stringing wins together.

Thankfully for MSU, Tom Izzo sounds very confident that his team could be in store to do just that.

Tom Izzo predicts a big run by MSU

In a press conference on Monday, Izzo talked about the upcoming matchup with Penn State as well as the rest of the season as a whole.

When looking at the rest of the season ahead, Izzo said “I believe this team is good enough to go on a big run.”

There honestly is a lot of truth to this statement. Not only did MSU look very good in its win over Illinois, but their upcoming schedule is very manageable. The Spartans travel to Penn State on Wednesday and then to Michigan where they’ll be heavy favorites in both games. After that, the Spartans then host Iowa and Ohio State in East Lansing. Michigan State will also be big favorites in those two games as well. So based on the upcoming schedule, there’s a good chance the Spartans could have a five-game winning streak heading into the road matchup with Purdue.

The flip side

However, Izzo also was realistic with his quote from above. I only shared the first half of the quote, with the second half reading “but I also believe this team is inconsistent enough that I don’t sleep well at night.”

I think we all as fans share those same feelings. Sometimes MSU looks like it can beat anyone in the country, but then it looks like it could lose to anyone, too. Also, the Spartans have been bad on the road, so these next two games could present a difficult challenge still.

But I believe Michigan State basketball has turned a corner, and I think Izzo does, too. If Michigan State can win these next four games, then an NCAA tournament appearance likely is set in stone. Then they will just be playing for seeding the rest of the year which would be just fine with me.
