Tony Lippett calls out Trae Waynes for considering rooting for Michigan

Trae Waynes considered rooting for Michigan to win it all on Monday night and Tony Lippett was having none of it.

If you’re a diehard Michigan State fan, you know how frowned upon it is to root for Michigan in any capacity. There are some casual fans out there who “root for the Big Ten” even if they’re Spartans, but the mantra “never Michigan” has to be followed closely.

That was put to the test on Monday night as a number of Michigan State fans had to decide if they actually hate Michigan or didn’t mind the Wolverines enough to cheer for them to win a national title.

Unfortunately, one of those Spartans was none other than former All-American cornerback Trae Waynes.

The former first-round NFL draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings had an excellent career against Michigan, helping to engineer wins over the Wolverines in 2013 (alongside Darqueze Dennard) and 2014 before departing for the NFL. But he had a tough time rooting against the Wolverines on Monday night because he claimed he wanted the Big Ten to win.

Former teammate and 2014 Big Ten Receiver of the Year Tony Lippett was having none of that.

The response was hilarious and so was the fact that shortly after, Waynes tweeted out “Go Huskies” after finding out that Washington, too, is a Big Ten team as of this year. The Huskies also represented the Big Ten in the national title game. So it was OK to root against Michigan.

Plus, if anyone knows that you should never root for Michigan, it should be Waynes. He played a major role in a couple of big victories in the rivalry and he knows what the hatred is like between the two sides. Good for Tony Lippett for calling him out.

Former Spartan fullback Todd Anderson also chimed in and agreed with Lippett.
