Trey Augustine confirms he’s returning to Michigan State hockey

Trey Augustine is one of the top Detroit Red Wings prospects but he confirmed that he’ll be back with Michigan State hockey next year.

He’s back, folks. After very little waiting, Trey Augustine confirmed on his Instagram on Tuesday that he would be returning to man the net for Michigan State hockey next season.

The news isn’t earth-shattering according to those who are more familiar with the Red Wings’ system because Augustine would likely play the role of backup if he decided to make the leap this offseason. One more year in East Lansing will likely have him ready to take over in Grand Rapids and then work his way up to the Wings’ active roster in a few years.

It’s still a huge deal that he’s returning, however, because he’s considered one of the best NHL prospects on the roster and Wings fans are dying to have him in Detroit with all of their struggles in the net this season.

Augustine could be the difference next year between just making the NCAA Tournament and having a legitimate shot to win the national title. He’s that good.

In fact, he was a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award this season which is given to the top goaltender in college hockey. While he didn’t make the cut to be one of the three finalists, he was still one of the best freshmen in the nation. He also helped Team USA win gold at the World Junior Championships this year. Clearly he has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Augustine’s season ended with a tough five-goal loss to Michigan in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but he was incredible all season long, posting a .915 save percentage and a 2.96 goals against average while leading the Spartans to their first-ever Big Ten title.

Adam Nightingale (and the rest of the team and fanbase) will be thrilled to have Trey Augustine back.
