Former Michigan State football kicker Matt Coghlin led USFL in field goal percentage

Former Michigan State football kicker Matt Coghlin was the USFL’s most accurate kicker this season, leading the league.

Matt Coghlin had a long five-year career with Michigan State football as the full-time field goal kicker. He got his career off on a high note, making 33-of-41 field goals in his first two years in East Lansing, good for about an 80 percent conversion rate. He was also a perfect 63-for-63 on extra points.

His numbers dipped a bit in 2019 as he made 22-of-32 field goals for just under 69 percent, but he did hit all 31 of his extra point tries.

In 2020, he got back on track, hitting 9-of-12 field goals in a COVID-shortened season. and he was 13-for-13 on extra points before going 12-for-19 on field goal tries in his final season in 2021 and 41-of-41 on extra points. Coghlin finished his Spartan career with 76 made field goals on 104 attempts (73.1 percent) and he was a perfect 148-of-148 on extra points.

While he received a ton of criticism for his inconsistency during the 2019 and 2021 seasons, he still managed to be dependable, for the most part. It looks like he’s getting even better as his professional career progresses with the USFL’s Memphis Showboats.

According to the Showboats’ Twitter, Coghlin led the league in field goal percentage this season, going 16-for-17 on the year with a long of 57 yards which is six yards longer than his deepest at Michigan State.

A 94 percent conversion rate on field goals with a long near 60 yards is wildly impressive at any level and it could actually earn Coghlin some looks at the NFL level. While it’s rare to see guys go from the USFL to the NFL, it’s not impossible, especially at the kicker position.

It’s cool to see Coghlin excelling in his football career after Michigan State.

Maybe he’ll be kicking on Sundays soon.
