Former MSU CB Josh Butler signed to Dallas Cowboys’ training camp roster

One of the more beloved Spartans in recent memory, Josh Butler, has signed with the Cowboys to their training camp roster.

Josh Butler was a fan favorite near the end of the Mark Dantonio era in East Lansing. He joined the program in 2015, redshirted, and then worked his way up to a starting role during his senior year.

In that senior season, Butler played in nine games and had 25 total tackles and five pass breakups but he made headlines for his Senior Day walk. He came out of the tunnel with his dogs, Roxy and Remi, because he had lost both of his parents during his college career. Butler really had some bad luck, but he kept his head up throughout it all.

That positivity was infectious and he vowed to keep pursuing his NFL dream after going undrafted.

Well, four years after his Michigan State career ended, Butler is getting another crack at the NFL.

According to the Dallas Cowboys’ official Twitter account, they’ve signed Butler to their training camp roster. He’ll be pushing for a roster spot over the next month.

In their search for depth at cornerback depth, the Cowboys reached back into the USFL pool to sign Josh Butler to their training camp roster.

Before getting signed by the Cowboys, the former Michigan State cornerback was back in Michigan with the USFL’s Panthers. He was actually teammates with former Spartan quarterback Brian Lewerke.

Now he’s getting another NFL opportunity.

The Cowboys admitted that they’re searching for depth at cornerback and signing Butler is a step toward addressing that. He finished with 29 total tackles during the 2023 season for the Panthers.

Even if Butler doesn’t make the 53-man roster (I wouldn’t bet on him doing so after coming from the USFL), he could catch on with the practice squad. We’ve seen Spartans make practice squads and then active rosters in the past (Joe Bachie and Andrew Dowell come to mind).

This will be a cool story to monitor over the next month.
