Former Michigan State cornerback Shakur Brown has won the XFL championship with the Arlington Renegades after starting nine games.
The XFL has been kind to a few former Michigan State football players. Mike Panasiuk was named to the All-XFL team after starring on the offensive line and he’s since earned a minicamp invite from the Steelers, Drew Beesley also made one of the all-league teams at defensive end, and now Shakur Brown is an XFL champion.
The Arlington Renegades beat the DC Defenders on Saturday night in the XFL championship game and although Brown didn’t play as he was placed on the injured reserve list on May 10, he still gets a ring. He also started nine games this season and totaled 34 tackles with an interception of former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan back in March.
Brown’s Renegades actually beat another Spartan in Jacub Panasiuk who plays for the Defenders.
Although they aren’t currently in the NFL, it’s good to see these Spartans get some exposure in the XFL and, like Mike Panasiuk, they could earn another shot at the next level.
Brown had a solid season with the Renegades in his first XFL year. Previously he had stints in the NFL with the Steelers, Chiefs, and Titans and even had a pitstop in the USFL. His experience surely helped him lead that Renegades’ defense and his nine starts showed that he earned the trust of head coach Bob Stoops — he started every game that he appeared in.
I’m sure there were NFL teams watching the XFL this year, scouting some potential talent to add to their rosters this fall or invite to minicamps. Brown could be a solid option as he’s looked like an NFL cornerback for years and earned praise at each stop on his resume.
For now, though, he’ll have to settle for being an XFL champion while he gets healthy.
