On Tuesday, the top Michigan State football target in the 2027 class narrowed down his recruiting focus, with the Spartans remaining in the hunt. Gideon Gash, a top-100 prospect in his recurring class, has Michigan State football among his top schools as he eyes a July commitment date.

More on Gideon Gash

Gash is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound athlete out of Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi, Mich. The term athlete is used here, as Gash could play either at wide receiver or defensive back.

Now, hearing a wide receiver with the name Gash or a defensive back with the same last name may sound familiar, as Michigan State football has two of Gash’s older brothers, Caleb and Samson, on their 2026 roster.

Samson committed to MSU after a lengthy battle with Alabama, West Virginia, and Penn State to conclude the 2026 class, and Caleb walked on to the Spartans, where he delivered two bone-crunching hits on kickoff coverage against Western Michigan to begin the 2025 season.

That does not make the youngest Gash a lock by any means, however. He is rated the no. 70 player in the nation by the 247Sports Composite, along with the no. 5 athlete overall and no. 2 player in-state, behind Harper Woods High School receiver Dakota Guerrant.

Last season, Gash had 540 yards and eight touchdowns on only 19 catches, along with nearly 330 yards between kick and punt returns. Defensively, he had 74 tackles, three for loss, nine passes defensed, a forced fumble, and an interception.

Gash would be a major get for the Spartans, or any program, as the tape shows one of the top athletes in the nation for a reason. He’s fluid with good instincts and great track and playing speed. He can excel at receiver or defensive back, but his unique length have the youngest Gash projected towards playing defensive back for Michigan State football.

Who is Michigan State Football Competing With?

The other members of Gash’s top six are Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, LSU, and Alabama. Michigan also has ties to the youngest Gash, as his eldest brother played for the Wolverines, with new head coach Kyle Whittingham bringing the maize and blue back into the race.

The SEC schools and Texas Tech all bring elite competition and the ability to have elite paydays alongside elite development. There is a reason these schools are among the best-of-the-best in the college football standings each year.

Gideon Gash originally got projections to MSU, but the experts have since backed off, noting that the amount of interest Gash has gotten has forced the experts to shy away from projecting him anywhere as of this writing.

Gash does not have a Michigan State official visit scheduled, but is planning to take that mid-week during his recruiting tour as schools court him during OV season.

Texas Tech (June 5), Oklahoma (June 12), and Alabama (June 19) all have official visits scheduled, and Michigan is expected to have one in the works as well.

What is Michigan State Football’s Current Class Looking Like?

At receiver, the Spartans have yet to land a commitment, and have also recently offered 6-foot-3 receiver Maliek Brown. Meanwhile, for the defensive backfield, the Spartans have landed three-star defensive back Ty’ire Clark, along with having multiple visits set. This includes Georgia defensive back duo Shyne Parham and George Murray III each setting June 5 visits recently.

The Spartans are also in the mix for another defensive back, being named in Florida prospect Larry Morgan III’s top schools as he eyes a late June commitment date.
