Jeremy Fears Jr. is about four months removed from suffering a gunshot wound to the thigh but he’s getting his bounce back.
Jeremy Fears Jr.’s freshman season didn’t go quite as planned. And by that, I mean it was a disaster.
No, not because of anything he did wrong, but the fact that he missed the final three months of the year because he was shot in the thigh back in December when he was home for Christmas break. It was the worst-case scenario for the freshman point guard.
Obviously getting shot in the thigh comes with plenty of complications and that takes away mobility for a while. He basically had to re-learn how to walk normally and went through months of rehab. Tom Izzo was hopeful he’d be able to return by the postseason, but it was better to just hold him out and let him continue to recover and potentially get a medical redshirt.
Fears’ progress had been coming along nicely as he was warming up with the team near the end of the season, but it was clear he still wasn’t 100 percent. Well, he may be getting very close to full-strength by the start of the summer.
On Monday, he posted a video of him dunking off one foot which took months of rehab to work up to.
I still remember the video of Fears struggling to put any weight on his injured leg just weeks after the incident. Now, he’s dunking off one leg. The progress has been remarkable, but we shouldn’t be surprised at this dude’s work ethic.
Fears probably tried to lobby for playing time at the end of the year but Izzo wouldn’t take that risk. That’s the type of player and leader he is.
Now, he’s flashing his athleticism and showing that his recovery is coming along nicely. Jeremy Fears Jr. should be ready to go at full speed by the start of the 2023-24 season and, like most MSU fans, I couldn’t be more excited to watch him play.
