Yes, it’s too early in the season to care about this or even for it to matter, but when college hoops “experts” dog on your team that’s arguably playing its best basketball in years, you take offense. And that’s exactly what Jeff Goodman did with Michigan State basketball on Sunday night.
The basketball analyst and co-founder of Field of 68 posted his weekly Top 25 rankings to stir up some drama on X and, well, mission accomplished. He posted one of the wildest Top 25s I’ve seen in a while, disrespecting the Spartans in the process.
Not only did Goodman leave Michigan State out despite the Spartans sitting at 8-2 and 2-0 in the Big Ten with wins over North Carolina, Minnesota (by 18 on the road), and Nebraska (by 37) over the past week and a half, but he also has Wisconsin at No. 16 despite two straight losses, Michigan all the way up to No. 15 with one win over a currently ranked team, and Auburn remaining No. 1 despite losing to Duke.
This Top 25 is all over the place.
Goodman dropped Memphis after it lost to Arkansas State on Sunday as well as Illinois who lost to Northwestern this week in a thriller. But he also has Marquette over Iowa State despite just losing to the Cyclones by 11. Purdue is also at No. 7 despite losing to Penn State this week and Oregon just lost to UCLA at home and sits at No. 8. Oh, and UConn took down Baylor last week and just beat Texas on the road and the Bears are still ranked over the Huskies (but this doesn’t really bother me because UConn has become unbearable).
Arizona State’s premier wins are Saint Mary’s and New Mexico, Pitt just lost by 33 to Mississippi State, and Baylor is 5-3 and lost by 40 earlier this year to Gonzaga.
Michigan State basketball has been on a tear lately with two losses to Kansas and Memphis, two teams that were ranked in the top 16 just last week and a win over then-No. 12 North Carolina. The Spartans also beat a NET top-40 team by 37 points on Saturday.
Despite being the first team outside the AP Top 25 coming into the week and winning two conference games by an average of 28 points, Goodman doesn’t believe Michigan State is a Top 25 team right now.
Wild.
