The day has finally come, Michigan State basketball fans. The season opener is finally here and the Spartans will be hosting a Monmouth team that pulled off an upset against West Virginia last season and finished 18-15.
Michigan State, on the other hand, was knocked out in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the ninth-seeded Spartans were eliminated by No. 1 seed North Carolina despite holding a double-digit lead early on. Tom Izzo vowed after the game that he would get Michigan State back to deep NCAA Tournament runs “or die trying”.
Those words echoed throughout this offseason as Izzo was criticized for not using the portal to land a star center and instead, he picked up a role player at the position in Szymon Zapala. He did land one of the best scorers in the portal class in Frankie Fidler, however.
This year’s team has minimal expectations which could lead to big things (hopefully).
We’ll see just how special this team can be on Monday night as it faces Monmouth in East Lansing. Here’s how to watch:
Date: Monday, Nov. 4
Time: 7:00 PM ET
Location: East Lansing, Mich.
Venue: Breslin Center
TV: None
Live Stream: B1G+
If you don’t feel like paying for the B1G+ subscription (I don’t blame you), you could listen to the radio call on 760AM or on Spartan Sports Network. Listening to Will Tieman yell “he got it” after a big 3-point is always a good sign that nature is healing and basketball is back. He’s one of the best voices on radio and opting to skip the subscription and listen to his calls honestly wouldn’t be the worst decision.
However, if you are willing to pay the subscription, this is the last game to be broadcast on B1G+ this season and it’ll give you a chance to see just how much these guys have improved from last week’s exhibition contest against Ferris State.
