According to a new report, Michigan State basketball is no longer in the running for five-star guard Trey McKenney.
When it rains, it pours. And Michigan State basketball fans feel like they’re facing a monsoon right now.
Earlier this week, four-star big man target Trent Sisley committed to Indiana over the Spartans. It was a tough miss, but not the end of the world. And then on Wednesday night, five-star small forward Jalen Haralson committed to Notre Dame over Michigan State. A tougher miss, but again, not the end of the world with several big names still left on the board.
On Thursday afternoon, five-star combo guard target Trey McKenney — who Tom Izzo has been after for years — trimmed his list of schools to three right before an Oct. 4 official visit with Michigan State and he didn’t include the Spartans.
This was as shocking as it was disappointing to see Michigan, USC, and Georgetown but no Spartans. Izzo had been after him for what felt like an eternity and even attended numerous games of his over the past six months only for him to cut Michigan State in favor of the Wolverines.
Tough.
The once-extensive list of potential targets is dwindling and it feels like there are only a handful of realistic players in play. There are guys like five-star small forward Dwayne Aristode, five-star guard Darius Adams (who I believe is UConn bound), four-star wing Jordan Scott, and four-star power forward Cam Ward. It’s not the list we all expected a month ago, but it’s where we’re at.
Izzo has some work to do on his 2025 class, especially since it looks like Davion Hannah may no longer be visiting next weekend and McKenney is likely canceling his visit as well. He’s going to have to work overtime to save this class.
It’s still possible to sign a strong class, but the 2025 outlook just got a little murkier.
