Michigan State basketball revealed its entire non-conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon. Who’s on the schedule?
Tom Izzo is famous for saying that he would play anyone, anywhere, any time. And that means that each season’s Michigan State basketball non-conference schedule release is always exciting.
On Tuesday, Michigan State released its 2024-25 non-conference schedule.
Michigan State opens up with exhibitions against Northern Michigan and Ferris State in October which is just weeks after the annual Midnight Madness event (Oct. 4). The first regular-season game is against Monmouth on Nov. 4 and that should be a nice warm-up for the Nov. 12 Champions Classic matchup against Kansas. Before that, though, the Spartans get another warm-up against Niagara on Nov. 7. So they should be heading into the Champions Classic with a 2-0 record.
Then Michigan State welcomes former point guard and graduate assistant Tum Tum Nairn and Bowling Green to the Breslin Center on Nov. 16 before hosting Samford three days later. If all goes as planned, Michigan State should be 4-1 at the very least at this point, heading into the Maui Invitational.
A 5-0 start is not out of the question, either, but Kansas is going to be a problem.
After Samford, Michigan State heads to Maui where it’ll face Colorado and then either UConn or Memphis (likely the former). If they win both of those games, they could play a team like North Carolina, Iowa State, or Auburn in the title game. A loss in either of the first two could also mean matchups against those contenders in the third or fifth-place games.
The Spartans will come home and play Oakland about three weeks late on Dec. 17 at Little Caesars Arena before hosting Florida Atlantic on Dec. 21 and then Western Michigan to close out non-conference play on Dec. 30. There are a lot of winnable games in non-conference play, but the Spartans will be tested heavily in the Champions Classic (per usual) and in Maui.
It’s time to shock the nation.
