The entire Michigan State basketball team was at the Breslin Center on Saturday watching Trey McKenney win a state title.
Not only is the college basketball season officially in the midst of postseason play but so are high school hoops in the state of Michigan. In fact, the state finals are this weekend which are held at the Breslin Center every year. One player in particular played for a state championship and he’s been on the Michigan State basketball radar for a long time.
Five-star forward Trey McKenney from Flint, Mich., played in his team’s state championship game on Saturday at the Breslin Center. The championship games are always a great opportunity for Tom Izzo and his staff to watch some of their in-state recruits if they make it this far, but sometimes MSU’s schedule doesn’t allow it.
With MSU’s loss to Purdue on Friday, that allowed the Spartans to get back in time to watch McKenney play. Not only was Izzo in attendance for his game, but the entire Michigan State basketball team was.
Trey McKenney shines in title game
McKenney not only got to play in front of Izzo and the MSU team, but he had an amazing game. He finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds on an efficient 8-for-11 shooting. He was also a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line.
For him to do this while leading his team to a state title is wildly impressive. It also makes it very obvious why Izzo is recruiting McKenney so hard. The Michigan State staff has visited McKenney multiple times in person, including this past week before they went to the Big Ten Tournament.
Could McKenney be the first commit in the 2025 class for MSU? There’s no timeline for his recruitment yet, but the Spartans have to love where they stand. Michigan State basketball always has a good chance to land any recruit from Michigan that they prioritize, and McKenney might be the most important recruit in this class.
Now that his season’s over, his recruitment will ramp up. If MSU can get him on an official visit soon, there’s a chance this recruitment could go the Spartans’ way very soon.
