Four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery is showing some serious interest in Michigan State football after the Jonathan Smith hire.
Michigan State football has had a lot of good news recently in the transfer portal. So how about getting some positive news in high school recruiting again?
Ryan Montgomery, one of the best quarterbacks in the 2025 class, has narrowed his list of top schools down. With a decision date fast approaching, MSU will have to move fast if it wants to win this recruitment.
Four-star QB Ryan Montgomery
Ryan Montgomery is a four-star quarterback from Findlay, Ohio. He is 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, showing he already has the size needed to play at the Power Five college football level. As I mentioned, Montgomery is one of the best quarterbacks in his class.
According to 247Sports, he is the No. 172 player in his class and the No. 11 quarterback.
Montgomery has had a solid high school career so far. As a freshman, he started 11 games and led his team to an 8-3 record. He threw for over 2,400 yards and 28 touchdowns which is very impressive for a freshman to do. His next season his team’s success and stats decreased some, but he was still able to throw for 1,787 yards and 22 touchdowns. Most recently, Ryan shined at Under Armour’s Future 50 camp where he won the quarterback accuracy challenge.
Recruiting competition
The Spartans are kind of an outlier for Montgomery when it comes to what schools he is interested in. Allen Trieu of 247Sports shared this post providing some insight into his recruitment.
As you can see, the SEC is drawing the most interest from Montgomery. Four of the five schools mentioned above are from the SEC, with Michigan State as the sole outlier.
Georgia and South Carolina might be the teams to beat right now, as they both have visits scheduled with Ryan this year already. But Michigan State football is by no means out of it. He has visited East Lansing in the past, most recently in May of 2023. That however was when Mel Tucker was in charge still, so he has not yet visited Michigan State since Jonathan Smith took over.
I do think it’s a good sign that he may visit us again, especially with the coaching change we’ve had. He had interest in Michigan State when Tucker was the coach, but for him to still have us at the top of his recruiting list with a brand new head coach shows he likes what he has seen in the Spartans.
Smith will have to move fast if he wants to win this recruitment. Montgomery plans to commit during the first quarter of 2024, so we likely need to get another visit scheduled before then if we want any chance to win this battle.
It’s tough to win a recruitment whenever schools like Georgia, Florida, and Auburn get involved. But that’s what happens when you recruit a top talent like him. Smith will once again have to work his magic to win this recruitment, but he has shown us so far that he should never be doubted.
