Michigan State football has picked up a commitment from three-star safety Reggie Powers over Ohio State and Pitt.

Michigan State football is starting to create some recruiting momentum.

After two official visit weekends, Michigan State is starting to pick up commitments from some of their most coveted recruits.

Reggie Powers, a three-star defensive back from Dayton, Ohio, is the most recent player to commit to the Spartans. Powers is fresh off of his official visit with the Spartans. Following his visit, Powers’ father said the Michigan State staff created a family like atmosphere that made them feel comfortable right away.

Powers had a total of 29 offers, including the likes of Ohio State, Clemson, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Since his visit, Michigan State had been pegged as the likely landing spot with Ohio State frequently seen as the second place suitor for his talents.

For a look at what the Spartans saw in Powers, below is his highlight reel:

On3 has Powers ranked as a four-star prospect while ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports have him listed as a three-star. The class of 2024 prospect is ranked as one of the best prospects from the state of Ohio. For Michigan State to grab a commitment from an Ohio native player that held an Ohio State offer is a great sign for Spartan recruiting.

Mel Tucker and Co. seem to be taking a little bit more of a narrow approach in their recruiting efforts but really dialing in on the players they believe fit their culture.

The hope now for the Spartans is that Powers’ commitment will have a domino effect with other prospects that took official visits in East Lansing.

For the last few seasons, the secondary has been one of the primary areas of concern for the Spartans. It appears that Tucker has prioritized this area in his recruiting. Powers will join Jaylen Thompson as newest defensive backfield additions for Scottie Hazelton in 2024.

The only question now is, who will be joining Powers to round out the 2024 class?
