Wyatt Hook was committed to Oregon State a week ago, but Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football changed that.
Shortly after Johnathan Smith received his first commitment as the head coach of Michigan State football, he picked up his second. Mere minutes after landing three-star running back Makhi Frazier, Michigan State secured three-star tight end Wyatt Hook.
Hook hails from Cupertino, Calif., and measures 6-foot-5.5 and 235 pounds. He had offers from the likes of Cal, Colorado, and Oregon State but ultimately chose the Spartans. He was originally committed to Oregon State, but decommitted on Dec. 6.
When looking at Hook’s tape, you’ll see the definition of a football guy. For someone who has totaled incredible numbers catching the ball, it’s impressive to watch how much Hook loves to block. There isn’t a ton of power in the initial punch, but Wyatt carries his blocks impressively downfield. He drives his legs through the defender constantly and more times than not causes the defender to end up on his backside.
Hook’s hard-nosed nature fits perfectly with the culture that is Michigan State football. He is simply one of those guys that will give a team everything he’s got one every single play. It’s great to see Jonathan Smith recruiting the same types of kids that Mark Dantonio did not too long ago.
Beyond his impressive blocking, Wyatt has great skill when the ball is thrown his way. One of the things that jumps out the most is his consistent ability to catch the ball in traffic. There are countless plays where he skies over a defender, and shows great eye-hand coordination to come down with the football. Over his three year varsity career, Hook hauled in 91 receptions, totaling 1,162 yards, and eight touchdowns. As he continues to get stronger and faster, he could easily become a lethal weapon for the Spartans offense in the coming years.
The second commitment of the Smith era is a good one. Hook is a versatile tight end that shows the ability to both block and catch the ball at the Power Five level. While he isn’t an insanely highly touted prospect, Hook is one of those guys where when watching his tape, the potential is immediately evident.
Hopefully Smith and Co. continue to recruit and land commitments of players like Hook in the future. Players like him are great to build a program around, especially when trying to have a quick rebuild with a solid foundation. Look for more commitments in the near future, as we get closer to Early Signing Day.
Go Green.
