Early Signing Day is less than 24 hours away and just a day ago, Michigan State football lost cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin to UCLA.
Normally, a loss like that right before signing day would derail a recruiting class at the position group that he coached, but surprisingly, the Spartans have only lost one commitment so far. Three-star cornerback LaRue Zamorano announced on Monday just hours after Martin was reported to have taken the UCLA job that he would be reopening his recruitment.
So far, that’s all the attrition Michigan State has suffered from the Martin news.
But one recent defensive back commit, Terrance Edwards, just flipped from West Virginia last week when he believed that Martin would be his position coach. Martin was actually his primary recruiter. So obviously the question arose about his commitment to MSU and his answer was refreshing.
Edwards told recruiting expert Corey Robinson of 247Sports that he’s “locked in” with Michigan State and that he can’t wait to sign with the Spartans on Wednesday. That’s a great sign for Jonathan Smith and Co.
Michigan State was able to flip Edwards after he had been committed to West Virginia since June. This probably had something to do with Neal Brown being on the hot seat (he has since been fired from WVU), but Martin being the primary recruiter here made things interesting. Edwards seems to love Michigan State regardless and he believes in Blue Adams and Joe Rossi’s defense.
This is good news because Michigan State could use some depth in the secondary after a season that saw guys like Dillon Tatum, Khalil Majeed, Chance Rucker, Charles Brantley, and Malik Spencer all miss time due to injuries.
Edwards is ranked the No. 715 overall recruit and No. 42 athlete in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports. He also held offers from the likes of Virginia Tech, Boston College, Clemson, Colorado, Florida State, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, and Tennessee. Quite the offer sheet for a three-star athlete.
