After being in the transfer portal for about a week, Darius Snow announced he will return to Michigan State football.
On Nov. 27, fan-favorite linebacker Darius Snow unexpectedly entered the transfer portal. Michigan State football fans reacted with a mixture of sadness and shock — it really hurt to see a player leave, especially a talented leader like Snow.
Eight days later, he’s back.
Darius Snow announced his return to Michigan State via Twitter on the evening of Dec. 6, and the news was met with much excitement from fans. Despite his recent injury struggles, Snow is a unique player that can bring a lot to the table for the Spartans. He started his career as a defensive back, but moved into a linebacker role in spring 2022. He brings a distinctive skillset to the position, with the versatility, athleticism, and coverage skills many linebackers don’t possess. If Snow can stay healthy for the whole season, he’ll bring an intriguing profile to the linebacker position and help rejuvenate a Michigan State defense that needs it. Granted, it can be difficult to tell how well a player will do after missing such extended time, but the potential is all there. It’ll be super exciting to have Snow back, and getting to watch him play for the Spartans again is a very pleasant surprise.
On a related note, one has to wonder if other MSU players that had previously entered the portal could follow Snow in this course of action.
In his post, the linebacker detailed his thought process, and it’s definitely an interesting read. He said that he hadn’t initially given new head coach Jonathan Smith a chance, but upon doing so, was convinced to rejoin the team. If Snow was impressed enough by Smith to return, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that other Michigan State football players currently in the portal could be, too. The Spartans have had some key guys enter recently — Derrick Harmon, Jaron Glover, and Zion Young, for example — and if some of them returned to the team, that could be a big help. We’ll see what happens, but the premise is exciting for sure.
If you weren’t fully on Jonathan Smith train already, this is your sign to board.
