Michigan State football landed three-star California quarterback Leo Hannan on Monday and it’s the perfect way to kick off the 2025 class.
The 2025 recruiting class sat at zero commits for Michigan State football and Jonathan Smith for months after National Signing Day, but we knew that wasn’t going to last much longer after the Spring Showcase conjured some momentum.
On Monday, the Spartans landed their first 2025 class commitment, breaking months of silence. And it was from an ideal prospect.
That’s right, the first commit in the Spartans’ 2025 class was none other than three-star quarterback Leo Hannan from Anaheim, Calif., and he chose Michigan State over the likes of Arizona, Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon State, Pitt, and Washington. He seems to be one of those late-bloomers who could find himself sporting four-star status by the end of his senior year.
At the time of his commitment, Hannan is rated as a high three-star on 247Sports, listed as their 22nd-best quarterback in the class. Not too shabby for Smith’s first quarterback commit and the initial pledge of the 2025 class.
This is a perfect way to kick off the class because Hannan will be looked at to play that leadership role on the field as a quarterback and now he’ll be doing so off the field as the leader of the Spartans’ recruiting class. He’ll be able to help recruit future teammates and when the quarterback commits early, it usually sets off a domino effect. Recruits like knowing who their quarterback is going to be. They don’t have to wonder in this situation.
Plus, Smith got his ‘Plan A’ quarterback target in his first full recruiting class. That feels like a great sign.
We already knew Smith was a quarterback whisperer and now he has his guy who is likely to rise in the recruiting rankings drastically. Not a bad way to follow up Aidan Chiles.
