Michigan State football is apparently getting warmer with four-star Indiana cornerback commit Chris McCorkle.
Four-star commit is something that hasn’t been said pertaining to Michigan State football in the class of 2025.
In fact, the Spartans have five commitments in their 2025 class and all of them are three-stars. That’s not exactly a bad thing because guys like Leo Hannan and Di’Mari Malone are close to four-star status, but Jonathan Smith is focusing on getting his guys. He’s not star-gazing.
Unfortunately for Michigan State, the previous regime was all about star-gazing, it seemed, and it’s why the Spartans missed out on a lot of ‘Plan A’ guys and even some ‘Plan B’ targets, too. They were left scrambling to fill out some classes because top priority guys were heading to programs like Miami, Texas A&M, Oregon, and USC, among others.
Now, Smith is focusing on getting prospects who fit the program and the culture.
But it just so happens that one of those prospects is a four-star commit to another Big Ten school. That prospect in four-star cornerback Chris McCorkle from Sarasota, Fla.
McCorkle has two official visits scheduled this summer so far to Indiana (May 31) and Michigan State (June 14). Smith is the only other coach who has convinced McCorkle to take an official. And that has to have Indiana and new head coach Curt Cignetti worried.
Why? Because Demetrice Martin and Blue Adams are on some sort of recruiting tear right now as they’ve helped Michigan State land Ben Roberts, Ed Woods, Lejond Cavazos, Nikai Martinez, and Jeremiah Hughes over the past few weeks. Oh, and they nearly landed Indiana cornerback Kobee Minor but a credits issue prevented that silent verbal from going public.
It seems like defensive backs are begging to play for Martin and Adams and that may be the reason Michigan State is now the only team listed as “warm” for McCorkle on his 247Sports profile. He has offers from the likes of Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, and West Virginia and yet he’s giving Michigan State a real look here. Obviously Indiana is going to do everything it can to make him reaffirm his commitment on May 31, but Smith and Co. are going to roll out that red carper on June 14.
We are officially on flip watch, folks.
