Michigan State football could soon lose a number of players to the transfer portal following the firing of Mel Tucker.
It was just announced that Michigan State football has informed Mel Tucker that they intend to fire him. I don’t think this news is shocking to anyone. What was my first thought when I saw this? I wonder what this means for our players.
Every single Spartan player now has a huge decision to make.
Transfer portal opens for 30 days
The transfer portal for all Michigan State players will automatically open for 30 days if Tucker is fired. The portal is usually not open mid season like this, but the NCAA does open it when a coach is fired during the season. By rule, all Michigan State players can transfer to any program for 30 days if Tucker is officially fired. This also means that other schools can reach out to our players and attempt to recruit them to their program.
Will any Michigan State players leave?
The obvious answer to this is yes. With as many players as any college football program has, there will no doubt be some that leave. However, the better question is how many will leave and will any significant players leave. That I don’t have an answer for. All Michigan State fans will have to anxiously sit and wait to see who leaves the program.
The fact that any player could leave really scares me. Any starter, up-and-coming player or even a high profile freshman could decide to leave. However, I don’t think you can blame them for leaving if they do. We also have to think about our current recruits. They can decide at any point to commit elsewhere and I wouldn’t blame them either.
Don’t get me wrong, I want each and every player and recruit to stay at Michigan State, but we have to be realistic. Each player has to do what is best for them, and if that means transferring elsewhere then I wish nothing but the best for them.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Mel Tucker saga unfolds.
