That was quick.

Two days. That’s all it took for Michigan State football transfer commit Mason Mini to change his mind.

The former Idaho Vandal tight end committed to Michigan State on Monday evening and said he was ready to get to work. Two days later, he has flipped his commitment to Cal, per his agent.

This is just all a weird situation. It just goes to show how much goes on behind the scenes that a kid could be “100 percent” committed to a school and then two days later he’s headed elsewhere. In the days of NIL and the transfer portal, this has become the norm, so we shouldn’t be too surprised. Heck, it’s happened to Michigan State on multiple occasions over the years.

Remember TCU cornerback Kee’yon Stewart? He committed to Michigan State and then promptly flipped to Arkansas. The same exact thing happened last offseason with Purdue wide receiver TJ Sheffield. He committed to Jonathan Smith and the Spartans before decommitting shortly after.

Mini’s situation was a little different, though. He was committed for the least amount of time among the three mentioned above and he wasn’t exactly highly-recruited out of Idaho. He was an 85-rated tight end transfer who had just five catches for 61 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2024. Mini was known more for his blocking than he was for pass-catching, so that must be a serious need for Cal because this feels like an odd transfer to go all in to flip.

The Spartans’ tight end room should be just fine without Mini. Although it lost Ademola Faleye this offseason, it returns Jack Velling after a decent season (although it didn’t live up to expectations), Michael Masunas who was raved about last offseason, and Brennan Parachek who was a four-star recruit.

On top of that, Wyatt Hook will enter his redshirt freshman season in 2025 and Jayden Savoury comes in from Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s.

Depth won’t be a concern, but the Spartans will have to hope Masunas stays healthy.
