Michigan State football is trending with one of its top remaining defensive back targets ahead of a July 1 decision.
Jaylen Thompson. Reggie Powers. Camren Campbell. Justin Denson? The 2024 Michigan State football defensive back recruiting class may soon grow by one.
Denson, a three-star cornerback from Rhode Island, recently named a top five of Florida, Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Michigan State with a commitment date of July 1. He also took his most recent official visit to Michigan State (June 23). Getting that last official visit had to improve Mel Tucker’s chances.
Michigan State has prioritized the three-star cornerback since before he was even given a ranking. He was evaluated by the staff and they loved what they saw. He received an offer from the Spartans on April 1 right before he really blew up. Some other big programs got involved but Tucker remained consistent from the beginning.
That consistency seems to have paid off.
In fact, Michigan State now holds three crystal balls to land Denson as of Thursday night. Justin Thind, Corey Robinson, and Stephen Brooks all projected the Spartans to land the three-star on July 1.
This isn’t a huge shock as Michigan State had been trending for him on On3 for a couple of weeks. But after his visit, it seems like the Spartans may have sealed the deal.
Denson would be a fantastic addition to the class. He’s a quick riser, going from unranked to No. 615 overall on the composite. Denson is Rhode Island’s top prospect and 247Sports’ No. 51 cornerback (although he can also play some safety).
If Denson were to commit, he would join an impressive defensive back class. Currently, four-star cornerback Jaylen Thompson, three-star safety Reggie Powers, and three-star cornerback Camren Campbell are all committed. Plus, the Spartans are trying to get four-star cornerback Jamari Howard to re-commit.
Circle July 1 on your calendars. We are on commit watch.
