Although the winter transfer portal window closed on Dec. 28, Michigan State football recruiting stays hard at work getting uncommitted portal players on campus. Most recent activity includes a wide receiver from an in-state foe.
News broke late last night that former Central Michigan wide receiver Evan Boyd would visit East Lansing this weekend. Boyd, an East Lansing Native, is the brother of former Michigan State offensive lineman Ethan Boyd.
A big-bodied wide out, Boyd checks in at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. During his redshirt freshman season, he tallied 21 catches for 302 yards and two touchdowns. With three years of eligibility remaining, it appears the staff is adding to their already stellar receiver portal haul with a pass-catcher who holds multiple years of eligibility.
On the outside looking in, it appears Boyd would be slotted into the WR5 spot behind projected starters Nick Marsh, Omari Kelly, and Crishon McCray. Boyd would add needed depth to a previously shallow receiver room. With multiple years to develop, the former Chippewa has the opportunity to grow under receivers coach Courtney Hawkins.
Generally speaking, I think many Spartan fans believed Jonathan Smith’s 2024 wide receiver room was one of the team’s better position groups. Following the season, it became evident that the room was far less talented than expected, outside of stud freshman Nick Marsh, of course. Jaron Glover and Aziah Johnson leaving the program following the season is a potential indicator of the group’s actual skill level.
Recruiting insiders seem to believe there is a high likelihood for Boyd to commit following his official visit. With East Lansing as his hometown along with his connections to the program, this makes sense.
I know many Spartan fans don’t love Central Michigan given their involvement in the Conor Stallions scandal, but Boyd is a solid addition to the staff’s receiver overhaul this offseason.
