In case you guys missed the highlight of the weekend, here’s the last-second Michigan State hockey goal to beat Minnesota.
Michigan State hockey has been on a roll this season. After a thrilling comeback win against Michigan last weekend, the Spartans still had some last-second drama in them. MSU once again trailed its opponent, this time No. 9 Minnesota, in the third period on Friday night 2-0. That, however, changed quickly as the Spartans scored three third-period goals to win the game.
The game-winning goal in Friday night’s matchup was a must-see moment for any Spartan fan, as it once again sent Munn Ice Arena into a frenzy.
Spartans win on last-second thriller
After trailing 2-0, the Spartans scored two goals to tie the game in the third period. It looked like the game was heading to overtime, but Daniel Russel had other ideas. The sophomore forward slotted home the loose puck in front of the net with only four seconds left to win the game for the Spartans.
In a game that Minnesota controlled most of the night, the Spartans still found a way to win. This group showed their resilience last week against Michigan and they did it once again on Friday night against the No. 9 team in the country.
Big Ten hockey standings
Heading into this weekend, MSU sat atop the Big Ten hockey standings. They had a four-point lead over Wisconsin, but the Badgers had played two fewer games than the Spartans. You earn three points in hockey for a win, so MSU did not have control of the title race heading into Friday night’s game.
That isn’t the case anymore. Michigan did the Spartans a huge favor by beating Wisconsin on Friday 5-1. This extended the Spartans’ lead over the second-place Badgers to seven points. That gave MSU complete control of their destiny in the Big Ten championship race once again.
The Spartans unfortunately lost on Saturday to Minnesota to split the series.
